2020 Western State Championships -- COVID-19 Guidance

With the increasing number of cases of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) being reported across the world, and the recent WHO announcement, AYSO’s 2020 Western States Championship hosts want to provide information for those planning to participate in the Western States Championships at Rotary park in Bullhead City this coming weekend.  At this time, the WSC competition will continue as scheduled.  Postponement is not an option.  Currently all the slots in League, All Star and EXTRA programs are filled and the few teams that found it necessary to drop have been replaced so we do not anticipate any byes.

Additionally, we have reached out to Bullhead City officials for their evaluation of the potential threat of Coronavirus in their jurisdiction.   The Bullhead City Manager has indicated that there are no known or suspected cases of Coronavirus in Bullhead City, or in Mohave County, AZ at this time.  Therefore, the Department of Parks and recreation has no current plans to close city parks.  As an extra precaution, the park staff will provide additional assistance with supplies and equipment for hand washing and sanitizing purposes.  We will continue to work closely with Bullhead City officials, monitor the situation on a daily basis and advise adjustments as needed.

We are also monitoring any updates US Youth Soccer (USYS) and The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) make or announce, and will communicate any changes in the current soccer policies regarding this issue.

Finally, we want to recommend the  following guidelines and best practices for the coming weekend events:

  1. In order to try to avoid deliberate skin to skin contact including the team cheer and traditional handshake or high-five at the end of the game, coaches will be instructed to bring their teams to midfield and clap, cheer or display other positive sportsmanship before and after the match.
  2. If your child or anyone in your family is ill – please do not send your player to practices or games.
  3. Please reinforce with your child the importance of hand washing and not touching their faces.  If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.  We recommend they wash their hands before and after games and practices.
  4. Please advise them to cover their cough or sneeze to avoid spreading germs.
  5. For any teams providing snacks – please make sure they are individually packaged.
  6. Players should not share water bottles, they should bring their own – clearly marked.

Our overall goal is to keep our championship events safe as well as create a great and memorable experience for our kids.  Thank you for your understanding and patience during this rapidly evolving time for all of us.
